John Wood was founded in Canada over 150 years ago as a tinware and farm implements company, before eventually evolving into one of the country's leading water heater brands. The brand was manufactured under the banner of GSW Inc., which produced water heaters at its Fergus, Ontario plant under both the GSW and John Wood names.

Over the decades, John Wood built a strong reputation in the Canadian market for producing durable, high-quality water heaters suited to the demands of Canada's climate. Its product lineup expanded to cover a wide range of configurations, including atmospheric vent, power vent, direct vent, and high-efficiency models, as well as tankless options. The company's tankless lineup includes John Wood powered by Takagi condensing models, offering a Universal Energy Factor of up to 0.94.

In 2006, A.O. Smith completed what was then the largest acquisition in its company history, purchasing GSW Inc. along with American Water Heater Company. The addition of the GSW and John Wood brands helped make A.O. Smith the leader in the North American water heater industry. Despite the change in ownership, John Wood continued to operate out of its Fergus, Ontario facility and retained its identity as a distinctly Canadian brand.
