About Ruud

Ruud was founded by Edwin Ruud (1854–1932), a Norwegian immigrant who lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He developed the first automatic storage tank gas-fired water heater, which went into production in 1889. Ruud eventually bought the rights to produce the product he invented and formed his own company in 1897. In 1913, Ruud merged with and absorbed the Humphrey Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan, which also manufactured water heaters.

By 1959, Ruud Manufacturing Company had established a well-regarded product line and a distribution network throughout North America, when it was acquired by Rheem Manufacturing Company. The acquisition brought together two of the most respected names in the water heating industry under one roof, with Ruud continuing to operate as a distinct brand within the Rheem family.

Today, Ruud offers a comprehensive lineup of residential and commercial water heaters, including conventional storage tank models, tankless water heaters, and high-efficiency hybrid heat pump units. In 2009, Rheem and Ruud were the first to sell a Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater, a product more than twice as efficient as comparable electric water heaters.

Named for water heating pioneer and inventor of the first automatic gas water heater, Edwin Ruud, homeowners have relied on Ruud brand products for more than 100 years to deliver proven quality and durability for their homes.
