Most water heater problems are a repair, not a replacement, as long as the tank itself is under about 8 years old and hasn't started leaking. A failed thermocouple, a bad heating element, a stuck valve, or sediment buildup are all common, fixable issues on a tank that's otherwise in good shape.  The trick is telling the difference between a part that failed and a tank that's failing. Here's how to sort through the most common problems we see, and what each one usually means.
